Full Text

But we print the speech, as it related to national affairs in full. Every voter ought to read it. Every man who goes on the stump ought to study it carefully and give the people the facts which Senator Simmons has dug out and presented with great clearness and force. The people who were indoctrinated by Vance's great tariff speeches cannot be deluded by Pritchard's sophistry if left unanswered. But for ten years or more other questions have been uppermost in the thoughts of the voters and there are thousands who never heard Vance batter down the ramparts of protection. Senator Simmons has done well to return to a discussion of the tariff: pursuing the lines laid down by Vance, Vest, Vilas, Voorhees, and the other great tariff leaders of twenty years ago, adapting the discussion to the conditions that exist to-day. The education of the people in these fundamental truths and living principles, always applicable to the problems of today, will make this State "keep the rudder true" to the doctrines of justice and equality.
