Why Jack Is Interesting,

From the New York Sun.

'Is there anything interesting about a sailor?' a business man asked of an officer of one of our new cruisers. 'Is there?' the officer repeated. 'Why, Jack is the most interesting figure in our country and always was. He has three aims in life—to ride a horse, to talk to a woman, and to get into a fight. In fact, he has four aims, the fourth one being to get drunk, but I left that out because it is not peculiar to sailors. But Jack is a dear, good fellow. He always wants to give away something: he wants to give away everything he has, in fact. If you come aboard my ship and talk to the men they'll give you more than you can carry away. Jack is trustful, sentimental, superstitious, religious, musical and kind. He is like a child, hating airs and sham, and loving honesty and courtesy. If I talk sailor talk when I give an order my men will die for me, but if I use shore talk and long words they will not do a thing more than I can compel them to do.'
