Judge Parker Elected Temporary Chairman of the National Democratic Convention
Baltimore, June 25. 2:25 p. m.-
Special: Chairman Mack called the convention to order at 12:16.
Cardinal Gibbons offered prayer
At 12.40 Chairman Mack reported Alton B. Parker for temporary chairman.
There was great applause by the new New York delegation and about half the other delegates.
Bryan came forward and offered the name of John W. Kern of Indiana for temporary chairman,
Bryan in dissenting from the judgment of the national committee said that he recognized that the burden of proof was on himself to show why the committee candidate shall not be accepted. He declared that the interests are harder at work here than they were in Chicago, and said, "You can't frighten the party with your Ryans or buy it with your Belmonts."
Kern suggested for temporary chairman O'Gorman, Culbertson, Representative Clayton of Alabama, Luke Lea of Tennessee or Shively of Alabama.
Baltimore. June 25. 2:40 p. m.-
Special: Bryan again addressed the convention, asking for order.
Chairman Mack ordered the nominations for temporary chairman closed.
Bryan challenged his right to so rule.
Senator Lea moved that each side have fifteen minutes more to speak. and the motion was declared carried.
Baltimore, June 25. 3:20 p. m.-
Special: Bryan says he will stand for any other man than Parker-conservative or progressive. In his speech on the subject he stated that if Parker is elected temporary chairman he will himself be a candidate for the presidency
Judge Parker was formally elected temporary chairman of the convention.
Baltimore, June 25, 3:45 p. m.—
Special: Kern of Indiana nominated Bryan for temporary chairman and the Nebraskan accepted
Parker won by a vote of 579 to 506 for Bryan.
Parker then assumed the chair.
