CHICAGO - (ANP) - Relgat Llessur, drummer-protege of band-leader Lionel Hampton, announced this week that he has organized an interracial quintet bearing his name. Llessur, who was with the Hampton organization for three years, cut a number of sides with Lionel on Hampton records.
The Chicago-born maestro said his combo has been in rehearsal for several months and is now ready for one-night shots and club dates. In addition to the drummer-leader, the quintet includes Joe Pernell, piano; Bill Joseph, bass; Emmett Spicer, guitar and Johnny Thompson, tenor.
"We're versatile," Llessur said. "We have both sweet and hot in the book. But a great deal of our work will be in the 'turn out the joint' Hampton tradition."
Llessur studied percussion under Hampton and was encouraged by him to organize the new outfit with Lionel's promise of support and cooperation.
