THE SPY'S TROPHY.
Amateur crews, as a rule, and especially college crews, do not care for prizes to make a contest interesting. The glory of victory is enough, and more than any other trophy, Harvard crews treasure the oars and rudders given to members of winning class and 'varsity crews. But as a memento of the fastest time made over the Lake Quinsigamond mile and a half course by an eight-oared crew, and with a hope for the renewal of the old Harvard-Yale races at Worcester, the Spy's trophy shield may not prove unacceptable to the winners. Owing to the change of the date of the race, the trophy could not be finished in time to be presented to the winners Thursday, but it will be shipped to Cambridge in a few days.
A PERMANENT TROPHY.
Why Not Arrange for Annual Contests Between Worcester and Harvard?
The close race made by the high school eight with the Harvard freshman crew seems to have stirred up the old boating fever in Worcester and several Harvard men have suggested that a subscription list should be circulated among the many Worcester Harvard graduates who have also been members of the high school to raise money enough to secure a handsome trophy for a series of annual races between the high school and Harvard freshman CLEWS.
There must be more than a hundred Harvard men in this city who have been members of the high school and they would have a manifold interest in such a plan. It would seem local interest in rowing, would develop recruits for Harvard crews, would tend to stimulate Worcester interest in Harvard and last but not least, might help to bring the college races to Worcester again, when the new bridge is completed to the great advantage of the city.
The only thing needed to make a success of this plan would be the consent of the Harvard rowing committee and the co-operation of the many Worcester Harvard men, and it is thought that the matter will be agitated.
