LETTER TO THE EDITOR

This is to inform the readers of
your paper about the Airfield situations in the lower Yukon area,
the area from Marshall down to
the mouth of the Yukon River. It
is also to refute certain misinforming statements,
published in
the Anchorage Times, January 16 issue -- not in any way reflecting
on the Times -- that there should
be no suitable site for a DC-4
field in the lower Yukon area.

The facts are that a suitable site
is available for such a field.

I have taken an active interest
in such matters, and personally
I helped pilots in the early days
of aviation on Seward Peninsula
when they had to land on patches,
on beaches. In our day, such field
situations should no longer
be needed. Roughly, as the crow flies,
it is 250 miles from Unalakleet
to Bethel, and 350 miles from salt
water to McGrath. In this vast
area we have three small airstrips
usable as season and weather
permits.

There is a real need for a year-
round DC-3 or DC-4 field in this
area, and the possibilities for such
a field are here.

Main Argument

a suitable site exists for a dc-4 airfield in the lower yukon area, refuting misinformation in the anchorage times; there is a pressing need for a year-round dc-3 or dc-4 field given the vast distances and limited existing airstrips.
