Full Text

Douglas--Pugh--Mathews.

The Cincinnati Commercial says "it is doubtful whether the appearance of Senator Douglas in this State is to be attributed to Senator Pugh. The charge has been made that our young Senator was responsible for the presence of the Little Giant, and that Mr. Pugh agreed to lead the Ohio delegation in the Charleston Convention for Douglas, provided Dug. would put in a laboring oar for Pugh's return to the Senate. The appearance of things since Mr. Douglas arrived and departed contradicts this charge. Mr. Douglas was not at any time in the hands of the especial friends of Mr. Pugh, but was groomed and led forth by others, and recent events seem to have increased the talk about the Hon. Stanley Matthews as an aspiring man for the Senatorial succession."
