WITH THE RED MAN
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
HAS INAUGURATED A COOPERATIVE
SYSTEM-FARMING.
Washington, Jan. 16-The department
of agriculture has inaugurated
a cooperative system in some of the
Indian reservations of the southwest
which has been so successful that it
will be extended to many other res-
ervations. It is largely along exper-
imental lines in the development of
the Indian as an agriculturist, and
the station at Sacaton Ariz. has
been particularly successful. The de-
partment has contemplated the estab-
lishment of a similar station on some
of the western Oklahoma reservations
but is waiting to see if the obser-
vation of the practical white farmer
alongside the Indian will not suffice.
before a station is established there.
The Arizona station is under the
direct supervision of E. W. Hudson
of the bureau of plant industry. On
the larger reservations of Arizona
there are plenty of Indians who are
fairly good workers and who have
wagons and teams. Farms and gar-
dens of considerable extent have
been established under the direction
of government experts and the Indi-
ans are taught proper methods of
farming. The dearer Indians take
kindly to the project because it
makes a better food supply for them.
During the past year special atten-
tion has been paid to onions and to
growing some new varieties of alfalfa
the Indians being taught the way of
irrigation. The alfalfa crop promises
to be exceedingly profitable.
