We learn from Castine that the British continue fortifying that place in the most effectual manner. The present force there is 1500 men, under the command of Gen. Gosselin. All the buildings near the water are occupied as stores at high rents. Many new buildings are erecting, and much of the business heretofore done at St. Johns and Halifax, is now transacted at Castine; and it is now so as it respects Eastport. West India goods are plenty, and the price somewhat fluctuating. Good brown sugar $14 per cwt. coffee 20 cents per lb. molasses 60 cents, per gall. rum 90 cents to $1 per gall. Vast numbers of teams are constantly travelling to the Penobscot to take away the goods which are brought to this side. Several from Hampden passed through this town last week on their way to the eastward. "Teamsters rights" is now the order of the day.
