The St. Louis Republican of the 5th gives a frightful account of the ravages which the cholera has produced in that city. Fortunately, it has nearly passed over. The Republican makes out a summary statement of the number of interments which have taken place in the cemeteries from the 22d April to the 6th August, which are strictly kept, according to the laws of the State; from which it appears, that in a little more than 100 days, 6,000 persons have been buried out of a population of less than 60,000. This is indeed an awful mortality; but, of course, all these deaths have not been caused by cholera, though far the greater part was-amounting to 4,060; and, moreover, they were not confined altogether to the stationary population of the city, for many hundreds were strangers who had just landed at St. Louis, bringing the seeds of death with them, and then sowing them more widely in every quarter to which they went. The table of interments in the several public cemeteries attached to St. Louis, shows that the greatest mortality arising from cholera was, for the week ending July 2, as high as 619; and 591 in the next week, and 639 in the week after. The last week that was reported, viz: to the 6th August, furnishes only 152 victims, but only 34 by cholera. The "Republican" invites its citizens to return to St. Louis, alleging that the mitigation of the disease, the re-establishment of quarantine regulations, and the increased attention to the cleanliness of the streets, are sufficient inducements for this purpose.
