Tuesday last arrived here a Sloop,--Glover. Master. from Antigua: She sailed in November last from Louisbourg bound for this Place, but the severe Weather we had. soon after, with strong Westerly Winds. drove her off the Coast. obliged the People to bear away for the West Indies. We are informed that Capt. Searl in the Ship True-Briton. laden with Stores from this Place bound to Louisbourg and Quebec, was blown off the Coast about the same Time, and arrived safe at Antigua.
The Vessels which have arrived at the Southern Governments from Foreign Places. have met (in the Months of December and January on those Coasts) with very cold severe Weather. the Winds strong at W.S.W. to N.W. which made some of their Passages very long. Capt. Gilchrist from Cadiz bound to New York, in Lat. 23 and half. was obliged to lay to five Days and at several other Times he met with hard Gales.-One Vessel from Philadelphia bound to Louisbourg, was obliged to bear away for the West Indies.
Last Tuesday Night died here. after a few Days Confinement with a Fever, John Carnes, Esq: Lieut. Colonel of the Regiment of Militia in this Town.
At the Court of Assize and Goal Delivery held here last Week, one David Smith was convicted of breaking open a Shop in this Town some Time in the Month of January last. and of stealing sundry Goods from thence; for which he was sentenced by the Court to be whipped 25 Stripes at the public whipping Post, to pay treble Damages and Costs:
And upon another indictment. the said Smith was convicted of setting fire to the shop, with an intent to burn the same and the buildings adjoining. to it, in order to conceal his felony aforesaid, and his other wicked purposes and designs; for which he was sentenced to be set on the gallows with a rope about his neck for the space of an hour; to be publickly whipped 39 stripes, and to pay costs, &c.
His Excellency the Governor. with the Advice of His Majesty's Council. has been pleased to appoint Thursday the third Day of April next to be observed as a Public Fast throughout this Province.
