Letter from Gen. Dix
ROCHESTER, July 6, 1852
To the Editors of the Evening Post:

In a letter addressed to the Tammany Society
a few days ago, on the occasion of their commemoration of the national anniversary, I alluded to the illiberal opinions of Gen. Scott, published by himself some years since, in respect to the admission of foreigners to the rights of citizenship. In the Tribune of the 30th ult., which came into my hands by accident this morning, I saw, for the first time, a letter from the general renouncing those opinions, and also his letter accepting the Whig nomination for the Presidency, in which he suggests an alteration in our laws of naturalization, which shall give the right of citizenship to all foreigners "who shall faithfully serve, in time of war, one year on board of our public vessels or in our land forces-regular or volunteer-on their receiving an honorable discharge from the service." Deeply impressed as I am with Gen. Scott's eminent military services and his equally eminent disqualifications for the highest civic trusts, it is a source of the greatest regret to me that I should have misunderstood and mis-stated his present position on any matter of public interest. Without stopping to comment on his change of opinion on a question in respect to which the Democratic party has never for an instant wavered, I hasten to request if my letter above referred to should be published in your columns, that this note may have a place there also.

I am, very respectfully, yours,
JOHN A. DIX
