STATE OF NORTH-CAROLINA.
[District of Salisbury]
September TERM, 1798.

To his Excellency, JOHN ADAMS, President of the United States.

SIR,

THE Grand Jury for the District of Salisbury, consider it a duty they owe their country at this eventful crisis to declare their entire approbation of the measures of your administration, particularly as they respect the present government of France.

On behalf of this district the Grand Jury feel full satisfaction on being able with truth to assure your excellency that there is not a man to be found resident therein whose sentiments they do not express when they without hesitation declare that under a continuance of your wise, firm and moderate administration they will be always ready to support the true interests of the United States, which they consider would be injured by purchasing either wealth, or ease, or personal safety, at the expense of dignity and honor; convinced that in free governments, loss of national character ought to be dreaded as an irreparable misfortune.
