MAIL ROBBERY.
The Portmanteau of the Mail from the Southward, with its contents, was stolen on Monday morning last, about 15 miles from Coosawhatchie. Mr. Sheether, the Contractor, has written the following letter to T. W. Bacot, esq. Post Master in this city, explanatory of the manner in which the robbery was effected.
We should imagine the value of the plunder expected to be derived by the perpetrators, would hardly be a sufficient recompense to them, for the hazard of the undertaking, and risk of punishment if detected—the remittances by Mail at this season being towards the South.
Mr. Bacot, with his usual attention to the interests of his department, has offered a reward for the apprehension of the robbers.
Bee's Creek, Feb.21. 1820.
T. W. Bacot, Esq.
Dear Sir— I have a most lamentable account to relate, which is, that the Mail was taken from the Sulkey this morning, while the driver was changing his horses, 15 miles south of this. It was cut, as the mark of the knife is visible on the fastenings. I shall take every measure in my power to recover it. I am in much trouble about it, as the night before, my Stage ran off the bridge with three passengers, and upset, and almost drowned one of the horses, which occasioned the Sulkey to be on the route last night.
