President of Spain Thinks War is Over
Linking With Rebel Leader Through The British Diplomat Stationed At Burgos.
PARIS, Feb. 17.-(INS)-Believing further fighting useless, President Manuel Azana of Spain has launched secret negotiations with insurgent Generalissimo Francisco Franco for immediate peace, well-informed authorities reported today.
Azana, who is staying at the Spanish embassy in Paris, was said to be bargaining with Franco through British Diplomatic Agent Robert Hodgson at Burgos.
Disclosure of Azana's reported feelers followed the departure from Madrid of Spanish government Foreign Minister Julio Alvarez Del Vayo, who during his visit in Paris only sought to induce Azana to return to Madrid, where President Juan Negrin's regime has re-established the capital.
