Bartlett Jaycees Man Of Year

Walter E. Bartlett, vice-president and general manager of WLW-C Television, was awarded the Columbus Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award as the outstanding young man of the year in the greater Columbus area.

AT A SPECIAL BANQUET, attended by some 300 business and civic leaders, Bartlett received a plaque honoring him as "The young man in Columbus who has contributed the most to the community and his profession during 1961."

A native of Marion, the 33-year-old Bartlett is the son of the late Clifford L. Bartlett. He is the brother of Robert A. Bartlett, a former Marion resident and a step-brother of Ronald Rish of Thew Avenue.

Bartlett was promoted to his present position in 1960 following two years as the station's sales manager. In 1961 he was made a vice-president of the Crosley Broadcasting Corporation, WLW-C's parent company.

Under his direction the station has made many contributions to the advancement of television in the community, particularly in the areas of public service and sports programming. WLW-C now presents weekly news interview programs which have afforded area residents the opportunity of questioning national newsmakers on the local significance of major issues.

This series, "Viewpoint," has presented Sen. Barry Goldwater, Sen. Stephen Young, Governor Michael V. DiSalle, Sen. Eugene McCarthy and many other distinguished public servants. In 1961 Bartlett originated "Probe," regularly scheduled news documentaries dealing with issues or problems of special importance to central Ohioans.

UNDER BARTLETT'S LEADERSHIP WLW-C's sports programming has grown to include home and away coverage of Ohio State basketball games, and telecasts of Columbus Jets baseball and Ohio State football.

In recognition of his achievements in the field of broadcasting, Bartlett was elected a member of the board of directors of the Ohio Association of Broadcasters. In 1961 he served as chairman of the organization's fall convention.

ALSO IN 1961 HE WAS elected to the board of trustees of the Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio and the board of directors of the Franklin County Council for Retarded Children. Additionally, he is a member of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, the Columbus Advertising Club and Sigma Chi fraternity.

Bartlett is married to the former Marilyn L. Wright. They are the parents of a daughter and reside at 8075 Olentangy River Road, Worthington.
