POLITICAL MOVEMENTS.—The art of political gasconading and political intriguing was never more fully or more happily illustrated than it was in this town, on the day of our National Anniversary: on which occasion, it was deemed prudent, and exceedingly proper by the Hon. ELISHA R. POTTER, to migrate from South-Kingstown, and leave his neighbors to celebrate the day in such a manner as best pleased them; whilst he, at the "metropolis," should, by sundry good natured smiles and flatteries, induce the good people of Providence to believe that he would best suit their wishes in the Senate of the U. S. Mr. POTTER, in his attempts to make friends and to gain support, where he most needs it, was unremitting and persevering, but it is believed he left us without effecting the purpose he hoped to consummate.
On his arrival here, and indeed for some months past, he has been marvelously friendly to the administration, and his friends have said that he is willing to enter into a solemn pledge, that he will support Mr. Adams' Administration, if the people will honor him with their confidence, and elevate him to the office for which he is an aspirant. But on this occasion, "by one fell swoop," he cut off every confidence that had been placed by the too credulous in his assertions and proffered pledges; and finding that those among us who have no disposition to part with the invaluable services of Mr. Robbins, would not come over to him, in a moment of wrath, he threw aside the mantle that had secluded him, and appeared in all the hideous deformity of a confirmed and devoted Hypocrite.
