Full Text

Extract of a letter from Leghorn, March 8.

"This day a Maltese frigate put in here in a very shattered condition, having had an engagement with two Barbary Corsairs, one hour and twenty minutes, in which many of his men were either killed or wounded, and the Captain says, that he had pointed a gun down to sink the ship, rather than fall into the hands of the Barbarians, when a Portuguese bore down upon them, and the second broadside sunk one, and the other sheered off, but that the Portuguese was going in chase of her. The Maltese frigate has been examined and is found so much damaged, that she must undergo a thorough repair before she can be put to sea again. The wounded men are sent to the Lazaretto, and surgeons are appointed by order of the Grand Duke to attend them."
