Is Completely Destroyed, Loss $1,500.
The barn occupied by the Eugene Fogg Express company, on Cleveland avenue, between the Milwaukee railroad tracks and University avenue, was completely destroyed by fire at an early hour yesterday morning, as briefly told in yesterday's Globe, entailing a loss of about $1,500. Eight horses, two sleighs, two wagons, eight sets of harness and two loads of goods stored in the building, in addition to a quantity of hay and feed, were burned.
Of the contents, the horses alone were insured, while no insurance was carried on the barn, which was owned by the Gribben Lumber company.
The fire was discovered by Officer Powers, of the Prior avenue station. In making his rounds he detected the odor of smoke, and just as he had located the source, flames shot from the roof of the barn. The fire appeared to have been burning from the inside for some time, and before the arrival of the fire department from Merriam Park had gained such headway that all efforts to save the building were futile, nor could any of the horses be gotten out. The origin of the fire is unknown.
