Largest Highway Construction Program in History Outlined by Chief
Grand Forks, N. D., Oct. 12.-(AP)
Asserting plans are being mapped for the largest construction program in the history of the state, Commissioner P. H. McGurren of the North Dakota highway department, said Tuesday main traveled routes will be almost completely modernized by 1939.
McGurren declared the department expects to spend $8,000,000 on reconstruction next year when a minimum of 400 miles of oil-mix road will be built in the state. The huge program will be conducted entirely with federal funds, he stated.
The commissioner said when main highways are completed the department will concentrate on secondary routes to bring them up to the same high standard.
McGurren explained the modernization program should include widening of existing highways, improvement of surface and straightening curves that have become a menace to operation of modern motor vehicles.
Turning to the maintenance picture the commissioner said routine maintenance has cost the department $2,283,000 which is about $10,000 under expenditures last year for the nine months period.
"Our maintenance department is not completely modernized," he said, "but by this time next year we expect to have every mile of road on the system in the best possible condition for travel."
