The America brings news of the successful
intervention of the British Minister at Madrid,
in behalf of the English subjects who were engaged
in the Lopez expedition, and sent to
Spain for imprisonment. The Minister simply
demanded the release of twenty-three of the convicts
on the sole ground that they were Englishmen,
and they were immediately set free. And
where, all this time, was President Fillmore?
And why was not his Minister at Madrid, ready
to make a similar demand in behalf of our
countrymen, who are now, probably, immured
in a Spanish dungeon? Never, in the history
of this nation, was our flag and our honor in
such imbecile hands as at present. We trust
that Congress will speedily interpose in the
matter, and direct the government in this instance,
at least, to spare no pains to protect our
citizens, now held in durance in a foreign land!
If the administration will not act, the people
should do so promptly, through their representatives.—Detroit Free Press.
