FROM SOUTH AMERICA.

Extract of a letter from Rio Janeiro, received at Providence, (R. I.) dated July 7, 1809.

We arrived here the 19th ult. after a short and pleasant passage of 6 days; and found several American vessels lying here from different parts of our states—among the rest the brig Matilda, Bates, of Providence, having experienced a very rough passage of 40 days with tedious weather the whole time. When 15 days out of Providence we were brought to by a French brig mounting 20 guns. from the Isle of France for Bordeaux, and treated very politely; being in want, we supplied her with some fish and cheese. Our stay here will be short; we shall take a cargo of coffee, hides, tallow, and perhaps sugar, and proceed immediately for Providence. With regard to the political affairs of this place, I have nothing to note of consequence—every thing is quiet. The markets are quite glutted with American produce—flour is at 8 dollars per bbl. pitch at 7, tar 4, rosin 8, gin per gallon 2, bread per cwt. 9, fish per quintal 9; all kinds of cordage and varnish very low; cheese and butter will not fetch the first cost. The produce of this country may be had at the following prices. coffee 14 dols. per cwt sugar 6, hides 6, tallow about the same.
