WASHINGTON- (ANP)- Despite reports that the civil rights issue is doomed as far as this session of Congress is concerned, a Leadership conference on civil rights will meet in Washington, February 18-19 to fight for revision of the Senate rule to halt filibusters.
Initiated by the NAACP, and co-sponsored by some 50 national organizations, the conference will seek revision of Senate Rule 22, which requires the vote of 64 Senators to stop a filibuster. The rule has been the principal roadblock to enactment of civil rights legislation.
Some 700 delegates from all sections of the country are expected to attend the conference to be held in the Hotel Statler. Delegates will meet in the Caucus room of the Senate briefly, and from there will visit their congressmen and senators relative to a change in Senate Rule 22.
At the closing meeting Monday night, after reports of delegates on their interviews with Senators and Congressmen, A. Philip Randolph, a leader in the fight for FEPC and also international president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, AFL and Walter P. Reuther, international president of the United Automobile Workers, CIO, will outline campaigns to be made by delegates in their home areas for civil rights.
Among the organizations to send representatives to the conference are: National Council of Jewish Women, National Association of Colored Women, UAW, CIO; National Alliance of Postal Employees, United Steelworkers, Anti-Defamation League, Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, I. B. P. O. E. W. (Elks), National Baptist Convention, American Jewish Congress, National Council of Negro Women, and AME Zion Church.
