THE SOUTHERN INDIANS -W.

We learn by an official despatch, received at the Department, that the principal chief of the upper town arrested the mail stage near Montgomery, in Alabama; that he declared that the land was the property of his tribe, and that the stage should not pass over it. He attempted the life of the driver, and also of one of the passengers. It is believed that he acted under the advice of some evil disposed white men. We learn that the civil authority of the State has been called to the aid of the contractor, and that the offender is in all probability now in custody.
