Every Attache Sleeps with High Powered Rifle at Their Bedsides.
MANHASSET, L. I., June 15.—Camp Carpentier, on the rolling Mathews estate in this quiet Long Island village, is now truly an armed camp. Monsieur Francior "Sven geli" Deschamps, the volatile French man who guides the French fighting machine, is taking no chances with "zose American villians" who might harm his Georges.
Today it became known that every attache of the Carpentier camp, from the pugilistic prima donna and his pudgy manager down to the servants, sleep each night with high-powered rifles at their bedsides Huge army pistols are also distributed freely through the big house in which Carpentier and his mates sleep.
This latest move to protect the precious Georges is the result of sudden and violent inspiration of Descamps. Too well has he read the stories of these American apaches.
Sacre! Suppose Gorgeous Georges should be the victim of a plot more sinister than Dempsey's fists! So the arming of the camp.
"You see," explained Italian Joe Gans, of Brooklyn, a sparring partner, "the whole world is on edge for this scrap. You cannot tell Somebody might come around and try to dope Georges or something Well, if they do they will take a tumble on a French machine-gun nest."
