"Better a farmer should feed his wheat than sell it at today's prices," we heard a man remark the other day. We are inclined to agree with him.
There isn't any way in the world a Clarke county farmer can break even with the market price of wheat at $1.45 a bushel. Even if he doesn't have the facilities to store his grain for a rise in the price, he would be better off to spend money to build a granary on his farm for storage to await the increased price which is bound to come. With corn apparently a short crop this year because of the drought, there seems to be every indication that the market on wheat will rise to at least the ceiling price.
Even if this were not true, a county farmer would do better to feed his grain this winter. The labor costs of harvesting and threshing have eaten a big hole in the wheat budget of farmers. They just can't make money and it doesn't take a financial genius to figure that one out.
The government has a plan of loaning the farmer as much as $1.49 on his wheat stored. If stored on the farm, an extra seven cents per bushel is added. Title to the grain is in the hands of the government but it may be redeemed by the farmer at any time. Such a plan is more advantageous and offers more in cash benefits.
If you plan to store your grain, apply carbon disulphide on top of it as directed on the container, which will approximate one pint to 100 bushels of wheat. Cover it with old sacks or canvass. This will not prevent the wheat from being used for feeding purposes.
