When Pichegru first appeared in the chair, his manners were simple and modest, and he was without any mark of distinction or even a uniform. His voice is clear and sonorous, his expression easy and natural, his mind clear and cultivated. He fills his office perfectly, and it is expected, that he will be as useful in the council, as he has been distinguished at the head of the armies.

Nothing can give more just hopes than the spirit of union and moderation, which appears in the Legislative body. The members of the two councils embrace with an affection, which promises an honorable support, and the solidity of it appears, because virtue is its cause.
