Full Text
A correspondent of the Independence Belge gives the following account of the ceremony to be performed, in case the Pope should resolve to excommunicate the King of Sardinia:
The ceremony will take place in St. Peter's Church, with great pomp. All the Cardinals will be present; the whole church will be hung with black: the crucifix will be veiled; and torches of yellow wax will be lighted and extinguished one after the other. There will be a grand procession of all the monastic orders to Rome, who will afterwards depart for their monasteries and convents, chanting the Miserere as they pass through the city. The persons who give me this information do not think that the sentence of excommunication will be pronounced by the Pope himself, but by a Cardinal selected for that purpose.
A great deal of sound and fury signifying nothing. The day for such bulls has passed forever: unless there should be a general conflagration to melt up reason and common sense, and with its smoke and dust, obscure the sun-light of heaven. The effect of bulls has been tried in this country, and it has been found that they produce no effect.
