Iroquois is Discovered to be on Fire
But Reaches New York In Safety
—The Origin of the Fire a Mystery.
By Telegraph to the News and Observer.
New York, Oct. 4.-An evening
paper has this: The steamer Iroquois
lies on the mud flat between two coal
docks in Communipaw today, disabled
by the stubborn fire which
has been smouldering in her lower
freight compartments for the last 36
hours. The fire was discovered when
the Iroquois was off Cape May, in
the first forward compartment.
Quarantine was passed at 2 p. m.
yesterday but nothing was said about
the blaze in the hold, and when the
Iroquois was docked at her berth at
the foot of Dey street the passengers
landed without any one knowing
the danger. The freight in three
compartments not reached by the
fire was removed and the Chapman
Wrecking Company's tug towed the
Iroquois to the mud flats in Communipaw.
Here her hold was entirely
flooded with water and the obstinate
persistent fire subdued about 2
o'clock this morning.
Wm. P. Clyde, the representative
of the line, spent the entire night on
the Iroquois directing the efforts to
quench the flames. The origin of
the fire as in case of many similar
cotton fires which have broken out
on steamships recently, is a mystery.
The water has been pumped out and
the damage done is found to be very
slight, not exceeding $250. Capt.
Pennington, commander of the steamer,
said today that at no time was
there any cause for alarm as the
compartment in which the fire broke
out was kept closed and flooded with
steam.

and was towed to Communipaw. Fire
