Full Text

Senator Sewell has given gratifying evidence of his recognition of the services of our colored fellow-citizens and voters by securing the appointment of John Goodin, of Stockton, to the position of one of the door keepers of the Senate. Mr. Goodin is fully qualified for a more exalted post, and would reflect credit upon a constituency as a member of either house—possessed as he is of varied acquirements combined with gentlemanly deportment; but he can afford to serve and wait, rather than wait indefinitely without being served.—New Republic.
