Full Text
The international bankers and industrialists who have acquired two thousand factories in the cheap labor markets of foreign lands and now through their politicians and journalists tell us that it would be a fine friendly gesture for us to let the American wage earner lay off work and let imports swamp the American market, may not be so altruistic as they profess to be.
According to Norman Thomas, socialist candidate for President, 1928, the cure for racketeering is to put the control of all industries in the hands of office holding politicians. Sort of a racket to end rackets.
No American who wants to buy a foreign cheap labor product in preference to a product made by the better paid American worker can honestly claim to be an advocate of social justice, because he wishes to build up the policy of cheapening commodities by cheapening the man who makes them.
Those who oppose a tariff system which makes it harder to encourage the foreign system of cheap labor production has any real interest in the standard of living for the masses, nor does he have an intelligent appreciation of the essentials of our own national prosperity.
