POLITICAL.
FOR THE VIRGINIAN.
The following lines, written during the last cold weather, were misplaced, or they should have been sent earlier. They were composed for, and are respectfully offered to the editors of the Virginian.
THE NEWSPAPER.
Make haste, bring the NewsPAPER in,
The cold wintry sleet's driving sound
Let's shut out the world and its din,
And close round the hearth's hallowed ground.
Pile on wood, make a glorious fire;
Now read out—attention, quid-nuncs!
Who could of a newspaper tire
But a close-fisted miserly hunks?
There are weddings for "Miss in her teens,"
Prices current to suit her Papa,
Peeps behind the political screens,
And rumors of peace and of war!
New marvel—a lady mysterious,
Like old Janus, sees two ways at once—
A thundering girl—nay, be serious!
She has an electrical sconce!
For those who love horrors, all dismal,
A shipwreck—a murderer hang'd—
Breach of contract of marriage—Ah! 'tis well
A blind bay, who tells lies, should be—bang'd.
A pile rendered classic, by names
To Genius and Liberty dear,
Like the Phænix, has perished in flames,
Yet expiring, soar'd proudly in air.
Good patriots—a new importation—
And politicians of the latest new fashions
Will be sold, a great bargain—the nation
Stands in need of—twelve bales of circassians!
Pirates, Prophets and Humbugs, Oh rare!
(Say, who'd want the newspaper, pray?)
When Jackson's bright gold circulates, I declare
I will take in—just twenty a day!
Were I rid of adversity—toad!*
(Could I sell but thy bright diamond eyes!)
She belabors me still with her birch on the road,
Yet all will not render me wise.
For "poor as a poet" I'm still;
So one who makes rhymes shall remain—
Like the poor patient drudge of the mill
Still climbing and toiling in vain.
CHARLOTTE.
Adversity, which
"Like a toad ugly and venomous,
Doth bear a precious jewel in its head."
[Shakspeare.
