FIRE!—On Sunday, the 16th inst. in the town of Poland, (Maine) a dwelling house belonging to Mr. Samuel Jordan, was consumed, with his two Children, one about four years old, the other 13 months. The circumstances attending this melancholy accident, were, that Mr. Jordan and wife were absent at meeting, about half a mile distant, leaving a small girl with the children in the house—the girl had swept the hearth, placed the broom in a corner near some shavings, and gone some distance into the woods—and it is supposed fire was thus communicated to the shavings, which enveloped the house in flames and consumed it with all its contents, before any assistance could be obtained.
