The anti-bobtail railroad car alliance of the South Division is, apparently, going to work in earnest. Mr. Bernard Callaghan, resident of South Division, informed one reporter yesterday afternoon that the Committee appointed to draft a set of ringing resolutions and to draw up a pledge for the members of the Anti-Bobtail Club to sign are hard at work, and will report at an early day. The main features of the contract are that all members of the Club will refuse to pay fare until a conductor as well as a driver is appointed for each car. This mode of passive resistance would, it is thought, effectually convince the Company that the people of the South Division were in earnest, and would refuse to play the role of conductors any further. The Company, Mr. Callaghan asserts, saves $50,000 a year by dispensing with conductors on the bobtails. This sum might be worthily expended in giving employment to several poor men who would make admirable conductors. Mr. Callaghan further stated that he had refused to pay his fare for some days, and would continue to do so until the Company conformed to the generally expressed wish of citizens who were heartily sick of the bob-tail arrangement.
