Full Text

NEWPORT, WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 1817.

The Message of His Excellency the Governor, published in our last, was referred to a committee of the legislature, to report thereon. Owing to the multiplicity of business which engaged the attention of the legislature, the committee were unable seasonably to perform the duty assigned them. We procured a copy from the Chairman of the Committee, for publication; the original now remains in his hands. This explanation is not made to satisfy the cavilling writer in the Providence "American," but that our friends may not be left to conclude there was any irregular or improper course pursued in the business.

Event Details

The Governor's message, published in the previous issue, was referred to a legislative committee for reporting. The committee could not complete the task promptly due to the legislature's heavy workload. The newspaper obtained a copy from the committee chairman for publication, with the original remaining in his possession. This explanation addresses potential misconceptions among friends, not critics in the Providence 'American.'
