Full Text
The nomination of Judge Davis by the Labor Convention although spoken of in political circles, is not serious. Much interest, however, is expressed as to what will be the action of the Cincinnati Convention regarding a presidential candidate. A few prominent Democrats agree they expect to vote for the Republican candidate other than the nominee of the Philadelphia convention, while not a few Democrats who have been interrogated on the subject are in favor of a regular Democratic nomination. Others are non-committal, but they say they will do the best they can in view of all circumstances. Politicians on all sides are exchanging views as to the probable effect of the course of the disaffected Republicans. Some gentlemen are making calculations as to the probable percentage of the estrangement from the Republican party. As apart, to this, prominent Republicans point to such failures as the Tyler faction in the endeavor to create a third party, and express themselves confident of success with Grant as their candidate. The political situation, to say the least, is confused, and almost everybody seems to be looking to the approaching presidential convention in order to acquire data by which to judge of the result of the contest.
