Full Text
A new version, impromptu, of Cock Robin, sent to the New York American, by a young lady:
1.
Who killed small Matty?
We, says Tippecanoe,
I and Tyler too:
We killed small Matty.
2.
Who saw him die? O!
I. says Ohio,
With my big Buckeye! O
I saw him die.
3.
Who made the shroud?
I, says Delaware,
I made it with great care,
I made the shroud.
4.
Who dug his grave?
I, says sturdy Maine,
And would do it, too, again-
I dug his grave.
5.
Who tolled the bell?
I, says Jersey Blue,
And pretty loudly, too,
I tolled the bell.
6.
Who'd carry the link?
I, says Arkansas,
With my bowie knife in paw,
I'll carry the link.
7.
Who'l carry him to the grave?
I, says big New York
He's light as a cork,
I'll carry him to the grave.
8.
Who'll bear the pall?
Missouri and Illinois
Must try to find two more
To help to bear his pall.
9.
W ho'll be chief mourner?
Says the State of Isaac Hill,
I claim that honor still,
I'll be chief mourner.
10.
Who'll be the parson?
I, says Kentucky,
And I think my text is lucky:
Mene tekel upharsin!
