MRS. CHOLWELL'S AIM WAS TRUE

Her Thrilling Duel With a Burglar at Norwalk, Conn.

SOUTH NORWALK, Conn., Oct. 17.—Midway on the right side of High street, Norwalk, stands the handsome homestead of George C. Cholwell, the New York tea merchant. The building is surrounded by spacious grounds.

This morning a few minutes before 2 o'clock, Mrs. Cholwell was awakened by a noise in the roof over the front piazza. She sprang out of bed, rushed to the front window and saw a man in front of the house.

She awakened her daughter Clementine, who, catching up a revolver, stepped out on the front balcony and saw man at the foot of ladder leading to the balcony asked what he wanted, and as he looked up she fired at him, but missed. He started to run toward the street when she fired again, again missing him.

By this time he had reached the road. Turning around he drew a pistol and fired at Miss Cholwell. The bullet whistled past her head. She returned the fire, this time hitting her man. He stumbled and fell, exclaiming, "I'm shot, Pete; help me."

By this time the neighbors were aroused. C. B. Coolidge, who lives opposite, organized a posse and started in pursuit of the burglars. Drops of blood marked their course, but at the fair grounds all traces were lost.

On returning to the house the officers found the Siberian bloodhound telephone wire had ed and been 000 worth of diamonds and plate taken.
