CHICAGO (ANP) Illinois Cong. William L. Dawson decries the practise of many part-time Negro politicans who view politics as a hobby to be played at during leisure hours in an October Negro Digest article which states:
"I think politics, I live politics, and I see politics as a scientific, 24-hour-a-day pursuit."
Referred to on Capital Hill as a politician's politician, Dawson says: "Courtesy and politeness are still the badges of culture and beneficial legislation for Negroes cannot be successfully accomplished simply on a loud-mouth, do-nothing basis.
"Don't get mad, get smart!" is the often repeated by-word of Dawson whose friends insist he is one of America's ablest and most outstanding politicians.
"To those who would characterize a good Negro congressman as a noisy, flag-waving representative-at-large for all Negroes," Negro Digest says, "Dawson hardly fits the bill. His methods are less of the spectacular, publicity attractive variety, but more nearly resemble the quiet. how-to-win-friends-and-influence-people variety."
Dawson says:
"Politics today is a business - a sound business that requires as much attention as any other kind of business. It is the biggest business in our nation and is the very life stream of our democracy. It's not a hobby to be worked on in leisure hours."
