KINGSTON (Jamaica) July 30. On Saturday morning last, about twenty minutes after two, the inhabitants of this town were terribly alarmed by a hulk taking fire, which was lying near Greenwich, belonging to government, as a repository for gunpowder, &c. She had on board 500 barrels, and not 5000, as mentioned in some of the other papers. No true account has yet been able to be got how this accident happened, but it is believed was through some neglect or other. The person who had the charge of the above vessel, as well as two negroes that were likewise on board, got safe ashore. We are also credibly informed, that an affidavit is getting ready, stating the particulars, in order to be sent home in the Dashwood packet, which sails on Saturday next. The very great explosion which the above occasioned, burst open the windows and doors of most of the houses in this town, and the people in general were in the utmost consternation until half past four, when their fears were appeased by the arrival of a wherry from Greenwich. The late tremendous explosion was felt in Spanish-Town, and was heard at May Day Hills, in St. Elizabeth's, near sixty miles from the spot.
