The Apollo is in the full tide of successful experiment; a talk is made of re-opening the Barclay Street Academy; and the National Academy of Design commence their grand annual exhibition about the middle of next month. The number of new paintings this year will be unusually large; some will be very good, some very bad; but we shall take an early opportunity of criticising the whole of them.
These exhibitions are increasing in interest every year, as the young artists are improving in their profession. This is gradually changing the public taste, and diverting the same entirely from bad theatrical exhibitions, and in a great measure from foreign trash, both as regards pictures and books. The National Academy only wants a little more liberality in its government to stand unequalled.
