Full Text
The very delicate committee of Investigation—a majority of whom were pure democrats—are very eloquent and lucid, when detailing the pretended misapplications of Mr. Secretary Pickering, though they are necessitated, against the grain, to acknowledge, that the whole of the Sum was expended by him on subjects of a public nature: Yet the same verbose Committee when stating the scandalous peculation of Mr. Secretary Randolph to the amount of near SIXTY THOUSAND Dollars, spent for private purposes, laconically dismiss the subject, by merely saying, "that a suit not yet decided, has been instituted against Mr. Randolph, formerly Secretary of State, for a balance unaccounted for, by him." -But Mr. Pickering was a friend to the Washington and Adams administrations: -and Mr. Randolph was always a violent democrat--an intriguer with Citizen Fauchet: and is a friend of the present order of things— "And that accounts for it."
