RUSSIAN DRIVE
BEAT RED ATTACK ON THE EAST
Defenders Approach New Year With Confidence They Can Hold Out Against Russia
HELSINKI, Dec. 30.-(INS) Hard-hitting Finnish troops tonight were fighting in a third sector of Russian territory after smashing a new Red army drive back into broken retreat across the eastern border.
As Finland approached the new year with growing confidence in ultimate victory, the country's rugged defenders not only held out against fresh Soviet land and air onslaughts, but counter-advanced deeper into Russian soil. It was even unofficially reported, but without confirmation, that northern Finnish ski patrols darted fifty three miles into Russia and cut the Leningrad-Murmansk railroad at three places.
On all fronts, Finland's stalwart fighting men beat back the invaders attacks, tonight's communique related, while Soviet warplanes in widespread bombing raids, killed at least seven civilians and wrecked one hospital, but failed to disrupt key Finnish centers.
The fresh counter-invasion of Soviet territory—third of its kind thus far announced—occurred east of Kumo, about fifty miles north of Lieksa in south-central Finland, after a large advancing Red force was hurled back in a fierce battle. Hot in pursuit, the Finns were said to be fighting in the direction of the Russian town of Repola, now believed to be menaced by the Finnish counters push.
(The Saturday night Moscow communique said merely, "Nothing of importance occurred at the Front today.")
