The Political Path
Is obvious to us all, though encompassed
with briars and thorns. It is merely the
path of National Independence and
National Defence Notwithstanding
the clouds that now overhang it, it may yet
become a path of pleasantness and peace.
The qualities which are wanting are Re-
flection and Union. Hesiod, one of the most
ancient of the poets, divides mankind into
three classes--those who think for them-
selves; those who let others think for
them; and those who neither think for
themselves nor will be thought for. Unfor-
tunately too many of our countrymen ap-
pear to act as if they belonged to the last
class, but if we will all unite in the first,
the Republic may at least be saved from
Ruin.
"Clouded as our present path ap-
pears to be, the luminous track of
glory lies open to our view! But our
conduct must be Just, uniform, ener-
getic, and independent.--N. Y. Journal.
