President Rufus E. Clement will open the Atlanta University Summer School Assembly series on Wednesday, June 12, with his subject "Social Change and Needs and Expectations of Leadership."
This summer's assembly programs will develop the theme of "Social Change and Leadership."
Two subsequent speakers have been announced, Mayor William B. Hartsfield of Atlanta on June 17 and Dr. Wilfred Bloomberg, Director of the Southern Regional Council on Mental Health Training and Research on June 25.
Registration for the Summer School will be on Monday and Tuesday, June 10 and 11, in the Trevor Arnett Library.
A number of visiting professors and specialists will join the regular staff, which is drawn from the faculties of the six institutions in the Atlanta University Center.
James Gist of Southern University, will give the course in science education since Dr. Edward K. Weaver will be in charge of a special workshop sponsored at the University by the Division of Science Curriculum of the State of Georgia. In this workshop there will be fourteen outstanding science teachers who will receive weekly stipend of $100 for the six-week non-credit conference. This workshop is in addition to the Institute for Science and Mathematics Teachers under the grant from the National Science Foundation.
Also in the School of Education will be Dean J. B. McRae of Lincoln University, Pennsylvania, A. Chester Robinson of Fort Valley, who will be director of the Health and Physical Education Workshop, Van Frazier of Chattanooga, Tenn., consultant in this workshop, Dorothy Prince of North Carolina A. and T. in audio-visual aids, Louise Collier of Evansville, Indiana, in elementary education and Mrs. Jenny Douglass Taylor of Tarboro, North Carolina, in health education.
CONSULTANTS
H. E. Tate, principal of the Fairmount High School in Griffin, and president of the GTEA, and Miss Rebecca Davis of the State Department of Education will be consultants to the Workshop in Educational Leadership and Mrs. Maenelle Dempsey to the Workshop in Supervision of Student Teachers.
Mrs. Irene Ashbury, currently studying towards her doctor's degree at Washington University, St. Louis, will give a course in Speech for the Classroom Teacher.
In the School of Arts and Sciences, N. P. Tillman, Jr., working towards his Ph. D. at the University of Wisconsin, will be in the department of political science, James E. Slaughter of Southern University in educational psychology, and George W. Woody, Jr., formerly of the faculty at Virginia State now studying at American University, Washington, D. C., in sociology.
Miss Ella McCain of Birmingham, Ala., and Miss Martha Riddick, librarian of the West Charlotte High School, North Carolina, will join the faculty of the School of Library Service.
