NEW YORK, Jan. 29.—Hope of an immediate settlement of the garment workers strike was abandoned today. Following numerous conferences some of the most important of the manufacturers have refused to abide by the terms of settlement proposed, and the vote to be taken by the strikers has been postponed. Half the strikers appear to favor the plan to return to work under a temporary protocol, while the other half seem radically opposed to any compromise in their demands and are determined to prolong the struggle.
Minor disturbances between strikers and the police continued today. Fola LaFollette, daughter of the Wisconsin senator, was in the crowd of organizers and pickets parading yesterday, when the police interfered. The police carefully avoided arresting Miss LaFollette, but took in tow Maude Younger, the San Francisco labor organizer, and eight girl pickets, all of whom were fined by Magistrate Barlow. Miss LaFollette insisted that she was as much a part of the demonstration as Miss Younger, and tried her best to get the police to arrest her.
