To Cut Down Speed

Montana motorists are urged to drive at speeds of less than 40 miles an hour, to conserve rubber.

An appeal has been issued by Gov. Sam C. Ford after President Roosevelt wrote asking his aid.

The governor also suggested that auto owners check tires frequently and make needed minor repairs.

The president asked the state to proclaim 40-mile speed limits, but Ford said neither he nor the highway commission was empowered to do this under Montana law.

State-owned cars have been restricted to 45-mile speeds, and the governor said he expected this would be reduced to 40.
