Heavy Damages.—Some time since, an accident occurred on one of the railway lines in this vicinity; a car ran off, pitched over a bridge, and precipitated some of the passengers into the mud and water. Several were more or less injured, and among the rest an old farmer, residing some miles distant from the scene of the disaster, who was considerably bruised, but had no bones broken. The agent of the road waited upon the old gentleman a few days after the occurrence, and found him at home, laid up in bed, covered pretty much over with wormwood and sticking plasters. The agent informed him that he had called to ascertain the extent of his injuries, and to make such remuneration as he might think it proper to ask. This was a new idea to the old gentleman, who inquired how far the car had fallen in tumbling off the bridge. "Fifteen feet," was the reply.
"Well," said he, 'I guess, considering that it is rather a busy time of the year, I shall have to charge you a dollar a foot!' The agent quickly handed him fifteen dollars, gravely remarking that it was rather high, but that the company never had any words in such cases; they always paid what was demanded, however exorbitant!
