Tenders His Resignation As Secretary of State W. D. Smith Named

Secretary of State Charles H. Grantland Thursday tendered his resignation from that office to Governor Buck. The resignation is effective at the pleasure of the Governor. The latter has designated Walter Dent Smith, head of the State Safety Council and a prominent Republican, as Mr. Grantland's successor, the appointment to be officially made shortly. Secretary Grantland retires after making one of the most able officials ever to hold that office. He was appointed Secretary of State by Governor Buck when he assumed office in January, 1929, and previously had served as Secretary of State under then Governor Robert P. Robinson from March 8, 1927, after having served as assistant secretary of State from January 22, 1927.
