EX-DOG CATCHER HELD FOR MANSLAUGHTER

DOG CATCHER INDICTED

The same grand jury returned an indictment of manslaughter against John King, former East Chicago dogcatcher. King, admitted shooting William J. Palmer, age 22, 924 West 19th on March 12, but was freed on a $2,000 bond and the coroner's inquest recommended that the grand jury release him from the manslaughter charge. King was discharged from the East Chicago city payroll after he did the shooting, for carrying a weapon while off duty. Prosecutor Ben Schwartz explained that there was no evidence that the victim, Palmer, was attempting to assault Mrs. Wilson when King intervened, and that Palmer was unarmed, King was, and finally that Palmer was not intoxicated as King had previously indicated. A manslaughter conviction carries a 2 to 21 year imprisonment.
